Dormice for your Christmas Table

Christmas Mice or Roman Dormice

Christmas Mice or Roman Dormice

Each year I enjoy putting on a Roman Banquet with my students. Some years I have taken on this project at Saturnalia (i.e Christmas Time). Other years I use the project to celebrate the founding of Rome on April 21, 753 B.C. Each time I require students to bring an authentic Roman dish. Strangely, no one has ever volunteered to bring the famous (or infamous) stuffed dormice. This year, that may change. Sharon recently shared a link on the latinteach site to this recipe for some adorable dormice you won’t be able to resist. Thanks, Sharon!

Ingredients include: oreo cookies, chocolate kisses, cherries, almond slices, and red gel icing. Another recipe I have seen will substitute marshmallows for cherries as the mouse body with licorice for the tails.

I am a lifeskills teacher who is always looking for fun things my students can make. This is wonderful. Thanks so much for sharing.
